Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
Damage to central vision, more common with age.
What is it?
AMD is a condition in which the macula — the centre of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision — is affected. It becomes more common with age.
Symptoms
Blurred vision in the centre of the field, difficulty reading, straight lines that appear wavy, and sometimes a dark spot in the centre.
When to seek care
With any sudden change in central vision, or if straight lines look wavy. A rapid change needs prompt assessment.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis is based on a dilated eye examination and retinal imaging (OCT). Some treatments can slow progression in certain cases.
